Sartre Walks Into a Therapy Session

After all the discussion and analysis on choices this week, Claude wrote: “You just arrived at Sartre.”

“Jean-Paul Sartre, existentialist philosopher. His line: “We are condemned to be free.” You cannot escape choice. Even refusing to choose is a choice. Standing still is a choice. “I don’t care” is a choice. Showing up and saying “nothing” is a choice.

“The people who study choice would say: there is no “no choice” option. You’re always choosing, even when you think you’re not.”

Oh wow, studying choice is a lot more fun than making choice. Oh. Not true. Thinking about choice in my life is definitely not fun.

Tim offered me a choice Friday I didn’t want. Now, needing to explain what that felt like and why it hurt. There’s an ask in there somewhere. I think I found it.
